Sustainable processing of Europe's low-grade sulphidic and lateritic nickel/cobalt ores and tailings into battery-grade metals

The 8th ENICON consortium meeting in Kristiansand, Norway was a success

The ENICON project held its 8th consortium meeting on 6-7 November 2024 in Kristiansand, Norway. The meeting was hosted by one of the project’s industrial partners – Glencore Nikkelverk.
It has been over two years that the partners are collaborating on sustainable processing of Ni/Co ores and tailings into battery grade metals. The project activities are carried out towards exploiting the potential of (low-grade) Ni/Co resources within Europe, while improving and developing the Ni/Co-refining capacity.

The first day was used for project meetings, and in particular presentations by Work Package (WP) Leaders. ENICON consists of eight WPs, five of which are technical ones, lead by two universities, one technology institute and two industrial partners. Major experimental activities were presented and discissions were held on technical level.

The project coordinator noted the smooth progress of the activities. All project outputs have been submitted on time and the level of collaboration between partners was satisfactory. At the end of the first day ENICON’s Executive Committee held its meeting and discussed strategic matters, including the developments in the mining industry in Europe and globally.

The second day of the consortium meeting took place at the Nikkelverk plant in Kristiansand. The consortium members were given a presentation and a tour of the facility.
The Consortium also visited the one-of-its-kind SafeWork Training Center, build by Nikkelverk in 2021 to train employees and contractors on occupational health and safety. ENICON’s partners appreciated the pragmatically designed facility and held a discussion on the crucial importance of training staff in close to real-life conditions.
