Enhanced Ni/Co refining capacity in Europe to process both EU-sources and imported non-EU ores, concentrates and intermediate
The ENICON consortium (consisting of 8 Beneficiaries, 1 Associated Partner and 2 Industrial Advisory Board members) has been set up with great care to combine complementary expertise, spanning the entire Ni/Co value chain (from mine to battery-grade Ni and Co (salts) as precursor for NMC cathodes) and covering both the Ni/Co sulphide mines/deposits/Tailings Storage Facilities (mainly in Scandinavia) and Ni(/Co) laterites (mainly in Southeast Europe) (see Fig. 1.1). Likewise, the participants have complementary and interdisciplinary expertise in the areas of ore geology; forensic geometallurgy; minerals (pre)processing; bio-, pyro-, electro- and hydrometallurgy; geochemistry and coordination chemistry; materials science; thermodynamic and process modelling; environmental and techno-economic assessment; as well as industrial production of FeNi, Ni-matte and battery-grade Ni and Co.
WP2-4 are organised as a flowsheet for Ni/Co recovery (WP2) from input materials, ultra-refining of the WP2-derived Ni/Co-rich solution in WP3, generating Ni and Co precursors, and the mineral-matrix valorisation of leach residues, tailings and slags, to transition to a near-zero-waste scheme. WP1 and WP5 adopt a transversal approach: they integrate the data and results from WP2-4, generating an integrated forensic geometallurgy protocol and LCA-TEA assessment and benchmarking. WP6-8 deal with EU project clustering; communication, dissemination and exploitation; and project management. ENICON requires access to Ni/Co starting materials and intermediates.
