3rd ENICON’s Capacity Building Seminar

May 28

The ENICON (https://enicon-horizon.eu) Horizon Europe funded research project, organizes the 3rd Capacity Building Seminar, at the 28th of May 2025.

The Capacity Building Seminar will be conducted virtually via webinar and is open to all interested individuals. The primary target audience for the seminar comprises graduate and postgraduate students, as well as early-stage researchers, whose research interests align with ENICON’s objectives are cordially invited to participate.

Two lectures will be given by Dr. Natalia Natalia Pires Martins (VITO) and Dr. Brecht Dewult (KU Leuven).

Dr. Natalia Pires Martins is a researcher at the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO), a sustainability research institute in Flanders, Belgium. Her research is focused on the development of low-carbon cement and alternative binders utilizing mineral residues as raw materials, adopting processes such as calcination and mineral carbonation to enhance the reactivity of minerals. She is formally trained in Civil Engineering (Bachelor’s) and Material Science (Master’s), and she holds a PhD in Civil Engineering (ETH Zurich, 2023).

Dr. Brecht Dewulf is a postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven, within the group of Koen Binnemans. Brecht has completed his PhD in the field of hydrometallurgy, with a focus on solvent extraction for the separation and purification of rare-earth elements. Since then, Brecht has been researching iron removal processes and battery metal purification, which he has combined with his teaching assignments on Inorganic Chemistry at KU Leuven.

The detailed program is the following:

Lecturer Lecture Date
Dr. Brecht Dewulf

(KU Leuven)

Recovery and purification strategies for nickel and cobalt  from primary and secondary raw materials 11.00 AM – 12.00 PM

(CET)

Dr. Natalia Pires Martins (VITO) Valorisation of sulfidic mine tailings in construction materials 12.00 PM – 13.00 PM
