Sustainable processing of Europe's low-grade sulphidic and lateritic nickel/cobalt ores and tailings into battery-grade metals

Occupational health and Safety

Occupational health and safety (OH&S) is of high importance, in all sectors, including in raw materials. Key aspect of OH&S is training work force to operate safely at industrial facilities.

One of our ENICON project partners – Glencore Nikkelverk – built in 2021 a SafeWork Training Centre near its facility in Kristiansand, Norway.

Nearly 2 000 people have already been trained in Fatal Hazard Protocols. The ENICON consortium members visited the center in November 2024.

There are many details, foreseen at the SafeWork Training Centre, as it is small mistakes that need to be eliminated to lower the risk of incidents. This applies to both employees and contractors. The center is also equipped with an industrial rig made of pipes and raised platforms. With a platform that is 13 meters above the ground, even the Working at Heights Protocol can be practiced in a realistic yet safe environment.

The ENICON partners appreciated the pragmatically designed facility and held a discussion on the crucial importance of training staff members in close to real-life conditions.

The SafeWork Training Centre also raises awareness on possible injuries that could be caused by human error. In addition, it has lead to the improvement of reporting documentation, which is useful to both operators and managements teams.

Preventive and life-saving training should be priority in all facilities. The ENICON project partners encourage industrial players to get in contact with Nikkelverk and find out more about the journey of building a SafeWork Training Centre for their staff.
